Volkswagen Scirocco R (2012)

by John Ewing,reviewed August 2012

VW’s sporty Polo and Golf variants have finally been joined by the Scirocco R.
It’s been available overseas for a few years, with local availability keenly anticipated.

Under the striking looks of the three-door body is a 2.0-litre direct-injection petrol engine as used in sibling Golf R.

When prompted by the driver’s right foot, a surprisingly strong and energetic response is forthcoming accompanied by a nice bass note from the exhaust.

The optional DSG gearbox delivered snappy shifts and felt less jerky at low speed than some DSG equipped VWs we have driven.

Scirocco’s ride is taut and mostly tolerable around town. But its abilities to soothe out and soak up the gnarls and pitting of many roads beyond the urban fringes are found wanting, even with the adaptive chassis control set to ‘comfort’ rather than the firmer ‘normal’ or ‘sports’ modes.

Praise, though, for the sporty dynamics with excellent grip levels, flat cornering stance and a solidly-planted feeling. Nicely-weighted, accurate steering and eager turn in are virtues, too.

Scirocco is a four seater and rear cabin space is tight. The front seats offer excellent support. Visibility to the rear is hampered by the broad pillars and letter-box slot back glass.

Perhaps Scirocco R proves the old adage that good things come to those who wait.
