Renault Latitude 2.0 DCi Luxe (2011)
Diesel variants usually come with a $2000-3000 premium over their similarly specked petrol engine siblings, but not so the Latitude, Renault’s replacement for the Laguna mid-size sedan.
Prices start at $36,990 for the base model 2.0-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder or petrol 2.5-litre V6, power trains that also drive the better equipped Luxe at $42,490.
A smooth shifting six-speed automatic is standard on all. For the extra money buyers get an impressive inventory of equipment above and beyond what is standard on the base model, including auto lights, tilt/reach steering, cruise control, fog lights, electro chrome rear view mirror, tyre pressure monitor, immobiliser, auxiliary input and USB, 18-inch alloys and full-size spare.
Designed in France, the Latitude is made in Korea by Samsung under the Renault-Nissan alliance and shares some chassis architecture with the Nissan Maxima.
We tested both the petrol V6 and turbo-diesel Luxe models and, while the former didn’t disappoint, the latter convinced as the smarter buy with its 380 Nm of broad-spread torque making it a better drive. In fact, performance testing showed there’s very little between the turbo-diesel Latitude and the new, 125TDI Volkswagen Passat.
Mention should also be made of Renault extending its warranty now to five years. So, the Latitude ticks plenty of boxes. Crosses are few – the ride quality on rougher roads is a bit harsh, and head room getting into and out of the rear seats is a little restricted.
