Nissan Pathfinder AWD TI (2014)
Nissan’s previous generation Pathfinder was an honest and capable offering, though ‘a bit old school’ (our 2011 road test summary).
Not so the latest, all-new iteration which boasts an aerodynamic, lightweight monocoque body housing a 3.5-litre, V6 petrol engine coupled with what Nissan calls the ‘Next Generation X-TRONIC Continuously Variable Transmission’ (CVT).
The result is a responsive, efficient and much more refined package.
Ride quality, even on the 20” wheels standard on our top-of-the-range Ti model, is relatively smooth for a large SUV weighing nearly two tonne and NVH (noise/vibration/harshness) is impressively well contained. Most high-riding SUVs exude body roll of varying degrees, and the Pathfinder is no exception. And, while the steering is agreeably light when parking, it’s short on weighting and tactile feedback at higher speeds.
There’s a choice of driving modes, thanks to Nissan’s ALL MODE 4x4-i system: 2WD (for best economy), AUTO (distributes the ideal amount of torque between all four wheels) and LOCK (for rough terrain, apportioning a 50:50 torque split between the front and rear wheels at speeds below 40km/h).
Seven adults can be ably accommodated, thanks to good use of space, with access to the stowable third row via the movable second row just the pull of a lever away.
Improved refinement, storage solutions, towing ability (rated to 2700kg), capped price servicing
Some body roll, steering could be better weighted, space saver spare wheel
AW20, HSA, LT, HFS (+cooled), tri-zone entertainment system with Bose speakers, front sunroof plus panoramic glass roof with power sunshade, bluetooth, CC, tri-zone ACC, remote KE with memory, roof rails
DFSCA, DKA, ABS, EBD, ESC, HSA, RC, rear PS, TC
