Nissan Maxima 350 TI (2012)
Nissan’s J32 Maxima now offers extra goodies, though buyers won’t need to shell out extra cash to own one with list prices remaining static.
The range-leading 350 Ti, already good value with a generous standard equipment list, now gives drivers improved vision courtesy of adaptive front lighting.
Drivers can also switch on a new side-view camera to show the passenger side front of the car in the navigation system screen. It’s handy in situations such as parking bays.
Another addition is a rear sunshade that rises at the flick of a switch and automatically retracts when reverse is selected, to avoid impairing vision.
Our test car was pleasant to live with, but hardly the vehicle to inspire more demanding drivers.
The all-alloy 3.5-litre engine has a sweet, refined feel to it and provides robust performance, albeit on minimum 95 RON premium unleaded. The Xtronic CVT auto is pretty seamless and rarely needs to wring maximum revs from the engine, thanks to the V6’s useful torque.
Handling and steering are sufficiently competent, and in the main should satisfy the target audience. Keener drivers (us included) will find the dynamics a little dull and ponderous, though.
Maxima’s chassis is biased for a supple, comfortable ride, complementing the lounge chair feel of the front seats. The foot operated park brake doesn’t win our applause.
