Jaguar F Type V6 S AWD Coupe

These ‘all-paw’ versions are available in the form of a supercharged 3.0-litre V6 coupe and supercharged 5.0-litre V8 coupe and convertible.

Styling differences are subtle: the aluminium clamshell bonnet gains a deeper, central power bulge and either side are new vents positioned further apart and forward than on rear-wheel-drive (RWD) F-Types. The V6 S AWD coupe, as per our test car, also wears model-specific 19-inch Volution alloy wheels. 

AWD is – to use the vernacular – all about putting power to the ground, and here the F-Type’s torque-on-demand system does the job to a tee. Total torque is to the rear wheels but, when required, a percentage can be directed incrementally and indiscernibly to the front axle. 

On some performance cars with AWD, the trade-off for delivering such optimum traction and grip is a heavy footedness, but not on the F-Type. Stiffer spring and damper rates compensate for the extra 80kg of the AWD system; result, the Jag feels lithe and athletic. 

The ride, understandably, is firm but not overly so. All 2015 F-Types get electric power steering in lieu of the previous hydraulic system, though this example is direct and well weighted.

To tap in to the supercharged V6’s muscular 280kW and 460Nm full potential, just select SportsShift, flick the steering wheel-mounted, one-touch paddles and row through the Quickshift 8-speed automatic transmission. Quick shift it is indeed, thanks to a software upgrade halving the shift times in Sport mode. 

The word ‘Sport’ is summoned up frequently when driving or contemplating the F-Type. There’s sport suspension with active dynamics; powered sport seats; and an active twin sport exhaust centrally mounted and bi-modal in note. The latter really adds to the drive experience; after all, doesn’t a Jaguar roar?
 
Creature comforts are extensive and include an eight-inch touch info screen, sat nav and Meridian 380W sound system. So, there’s very little to dislike.

Even boot space – just a paltry 196 litres on the F-Type convertible with full-sized spare wheel in place – swells to a useful 315 (407 without the parcel tray and spare) on the coupe.

It’s a great car, the AWD coupe, but so is the equivalent RWD model. Be sure to drive both before parting with – in this case – a $15,700 premium. 
 
Unless you’re frequently going to need the AWD’s higher grip and traction levels (think track and/or heavy weather conditions), plump instead for the RWD and its purer drive experience.
