Hyundai i30 Active X
Hyundai’s popular, small five-door hatch, the i30, has undergone a mid-life styling and equipment upgrade.
Gone is the Elite, with the ActiveX instated as the new mid-grade level in a variant line-up. There is a choice of petrol and diesel engines and manual and auto transmissions in each of four models except the Premium, which is diesel/auto only.
Unfortunately, both the 1.8 and 2.0-litre petrol engines have taken a slight power and torque cut as a trade-off to Euro V emissions compliancy. The 1.8-litre unit in our ActiveX test car loses 3kW (now 107kW) and 3Nm (now 175Nm), though we suspect performance would still meet the expectations of most buyers in this segment. Ditto the ride and handling competency, which Hyundai continues to fine tune under Australian conditions.
Everyday usability has been enhanced by the addition of a five-inch colour touchscreen display which, in a sign of the times, no longer features a CD player but streams audio over an internet-connected smartphone via the Pandora music app. It also displays video feed from the rear view camera.
Other standard equipment includes air conditioning, 16-inch alloys; full-size spare; rear park sensors; central locking; keyless entry with alarm; Bluetooth phone and audio streaming; steering wheel-mounted audio controls; powered/folding/heated side mirrors; leather-appointed seats; cooled glovebox; rear heating ducts.
The interior is comfortable and roomy and cargo capacity of 378 litres expands to 16 litres with the rear seats folded.
More equipment, safety, practicality.
Slightly less power and torque outputs.
