BMW 320d Touring (2010)

by John Ewing,reviewed October 2010

The 320d Touring does a fine job of melding practical virtues with the breed’s traditional driver appeal.

For starters there’s a usefully proportioned station wagon body and fuel-miserly 5.4-litres/100 km official combined fuel consumption. We managed an average of 6.9-litres/100km under varying conditions including city, highway and more up-tempo operation over sinuous country roads. The diesel engine always shows strength and purpose in its performance and is well served by the standard auto’s ratios and prompt, smooth shifts.

Its taut European ride, good steering and precise communicative handling are traits that will make it a driver’s darling. More oddments stowage spaces for mobiles, wallets and other paraphernalia in the cabin would be welcome.
