A bug's life
Few cars have left a mark on the automotive industry – and countless generations – quite like the Volkswagen Beetle.
Celebrated for its economy and unconventional styling, the German-made “bug” became a favourite the world over after its inception in 1938.
So iconic was the Volkswagen Beetle, it had a social effect car makers could only dream of – countless books and magazine articles have been dedicated to the car, which even became a movie star thanks to the Herbie franchise.
On Sunday, 15 July, 2018, CD MotorFest will celebrate the 80th anniversary of the Volkswagen Beetle at Eagle Farm Racecourse.
Headlining the day will be a replica of Herbie, which is featured on the MotorFest badge, courtesy of VW enthusiast Chris Ball.
“I was brought up around Volkswagens,” Mr Ball said.
“I can remember when I was really little, family members would put on Herbie to keep me quiet at family gatherings and I was instantly hooked.
“There was very little Herbie merchandise in Australia when I first saw the movie in 1995, but gradually as the years went by I discovered a few toys and, when I was old enough, thought why not build the actual thing.”
Mr Ball said he doesn’t know if it was the car’s cuteness or the sound that drew him in, but he was instantly hooked on the early Volkswagen Beetle.
“My parents and friends suggested I get one of the new models because it’s a bit safer, but it just wasn’t the same,” he said.
The new ones are nice, modern cars, but nothing beats the original.
See the Herbie replica alongside hundreds of other vintage, veteran, classic and special interest cars of all makes and models at MotorFest. All the family favourites will be there including roving entertainment, market stalls, kids’ rides and food stalls.
Entry costs $2 and is free for children aged under three, with all funds raised supporting CD LifeFlight, CD Capricorn Rescue, CD CQ Rescue and Heart of Australia.
Gates open at 10am, with festivities continuing until 3pm. Free off-street parking is available.
